Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

lymphatic systemThe Lymphatic system is a network of delicate vessels (tubes) throughout the body. Its major function is to collect excess fluid from the tissues and take it back to the heart. This lymph fluid is sent to the lymph nodes (glands) where the waste products are filtered out, broken down or stored, bacteria and viruses are destroyed along with other important things. After this process the fluid has been purified and is then returned back into the blood stream.

WHAT IS LYMPHOEDEMA?

Lymphoedema is the accumulation of fluid in the interstium caused by dysfunction or damage to the lymphatic system.

WHAT IS A MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (MLD) TREATMENT?

MLD is a gentle hand on treatment that helps to stimulate the circulation of lymph fluid around the body. It helps to increase the fluid process by directing it to the viable lymph nodes, filtering the fluid and then returning it to the heart.

What conditions benefit from it?

  • Persistent swelling
  • Swelling post-surgery
  • Post mastectomy
  • Palliative care
  • Swelling with injuries
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Lymphoedema
  • Sinusitis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Fibromyalgia
  • MS

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A TREATMENT?

On an initial appointment, a thorough history will be taken and a good understanding of how to specially treat the condition. Once that is obtained the therapist will explain what they will treat accordingly. The lymph nodes with be ‘cleared’ to allow for fluid to be directed to these viable lymph nodes. Slow and gentle strokes will be applied to direct the fluid (Typically no oil or cream is used). The nodes will be ‘cleared’ at the end of the session as well. Exercises and general information will be given after the treatment.
